Who and what

You are looking at the privacy policy page for my friends and family newsletter

This is my personal site and newsletter. It isn't run by a faceless corporation. If you have a privacy issue please contact me directly at privacy (at) smoofus.net

Types of Data Collected

Since the only people that should access this are my personal friends and family I'm not interested in your personal data beyond what is required to make the newsletter subscriptions work. The data I collect is as follows:

Personal Data

  • Email address
  • Your name, although this is optional. You can just provide an email address.
  • Your membership status. The Ghost system used here distinguishes between paid and free site members. Given that the purpose of this newsletter is to share my personal updates with friends and family I don't collect payments so everyone is a free member.
  • Usage Data

Usage data is collected automatically.

Usage data may include information such as a device's Internet Protocol address (e.g. IP address), browser type, browser version, the webpages visited, the time and date of the visit, the time spent on those pages, unique device identifiers and other diagnostic data. IP addresses collected for the purposes of survey tracking are anonymized unless otherwise stated.

I have no intention of sharing or selling this data. That's not why I'm here.

That said, there are a few items to be cognizant of.

Embedded content

Posts and newsletters may include embedded content (videos, images, articles, etc.).  

Embedded content from other websites behave in the same way as if you visit that website directly.

These websites may collect data about you, use cookies and embed additional third-party tracking. They may monitor your interaction with that embedded content, including tracking your interaction with the embedded content if you have an account and are logged in to that website.

How long do I keep your data?

If you are a registered user, I store your name, email address and the other data mentioned in the list above in a user profile. When you stop being a registered user, that profile gets deleted.

Use of Your Personal Data

I may use personal data for the following purposes:

  • To manage user accounts
  • To contact users
  • To manage user requests
  • To publish survey results when allowed

I will not share sensitive user data with any external parties unless otherwise stated.
